The picture below shows the formula for the Pythagorean theorem. Remember that this formula only applies to right triangles. When you use the Pythagorean theorem, just remember that the hypotenuse is always 'C' in the formula above. Look at the following examples to see pictures of the formula. More on the Pythagorean theorem. Identify the legs and the hypotenuse of the right triangle.

The legs have length 6 and 8.

Substitute values into the formula remember 'C' is the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse is Remember our steps for how to use this theorem.

This problems is like example 1 because we are solving for the hypotenuse. The legs have length 14 and The hypotenuse is X. Use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the value of X. Round your answer to the nearest tenth. This problems is like example 2 because we are solving for one of the legs. The legs have length 9 and X. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Pythagoras' theorem can be used to solve 3-dimensional problems which involve calculating the length of a right-angled triangle. It may be necessary to use Pythagoras' theorem more than once in a problem.

Calculate the length AF. Draw the right-angled triangle ACF and label the sides.

This is the right-angled triangle that contains the unknown length AF. To calculate the length AF, the length AC is needed. Do not round this answer yet. The length AC is cm. ABCDV is a square based pyramid.

O is the midpoint of the square base ABCD. The perpendicular height of the pyramid OV is 3 cm. Calculate the length AV. Give the answer to one decimal place. Draw the right-angled triangle AOV and label the sides. This is the right-angled triangle that contains the unknown length AV.

To calculate the length AV, the length OA is needed. Draw the right-angled triangle ACD and label the sides. The length OA is cm. Pythagoras' theorem in 3 dimensions - Higher.Teachers Pay Teachers is an online marketplace where teachers buy and sell original educational materials.

In a right angled triangle: the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. If we know the lengths of two sides of a right angled triangle, we can find the length of the third side.

But remember it only works on right angled triangles! Then we use algebra to find any missing value, as in these examples:. Here is one of the oldest proofs that the square on the long side has the same area as the other squares.

We also have a proof by adding up the areas. Hide Ads About Ads. Example: A "3,4,5" triangle has a right angle in it. Example: Solve this triangle.

Example: What is the diagonal distance across a square of size 1? Example: Does this triangle have a Right Angle? Yes, it does have a Right Angle! Example: Does an 8, 15, 16 triangle have a Right Angle? Historical Note: while we call it Pythagoras' Theorem, it was also known by Indian, Greek, Chinese and Babylonian mathematicians well before he lived!Pythagoras' theorem can also be used to solve 3D problems.

You often need to use Pythagoras' theorem more than once in each problem as we create extra right-angled triangles in the 3D shapes. This cuboid has side lengths of 2cm, 3cm and 6cm. Work out the length of the diagonal AF.

You do not need to find the root as we will need to square it in the following step. Now try the example question below.

Work out the vertical height VM in this square-based pyramid and give your answer to one decimal place. The square base ABCD has side lengths of 5cm. M is the mid point of the square base. First find the diagonal length of the base AC to 1 decimal place. To find AM, we need of AC.

Now that we know two dimensions of the triangle VMA inside our pyramid, we can calculate the length of VM. Using Pythagoras in 3D Pythagoras' theorem can also be used to solve 3D problems. Example This cuboid has side lengths of 2cm, 3cm and 6cm. Question Work out the vertical height VM in this square-based pyramid and give your answer to one decimal place.

Video transcript - [Voiceover] So we have an interesting shape right over here. The base is a rectangular prism. And the dimensions of that rectangular prism, it's three units I guess we could say tall, four units wide, and then four units long.

And then on top of that, on top of that, we have what you could call a right pyramid, where the height of this right pyramid, so if you start at the center of its base right over here, and you go to the top, this height right over here is one unit.

And this hasn't been drawn completely to scale, and kind of the perspective skews a little bit. But our goal here, our goal here, is to figure out what is the length? What is the length of one of these edges right over here? So either that one, or this one right over here.

What is that length? And we will call that, we will call that x. And so I encourage you to pause this video and try to think about it on your own. Remember, this is a right, this is a right pyramid.

So what that tells us is that this red line, that's one unit long, it is perpendicular, it is perpendicular to this entire plane. It's perpendicular to the top of the rectangular prism. So with that in mind, I encourage you to pause the video and see if you can figure it out. And I will give you a hint.
